    You might have heard the term “mesh Wi-Fi network” but remain (understandably) uncertain what it actually means. It refers to a system where multiple devices – a main router and numerous nodes – together act as just one Wi-Fi network, allowing you to benefit from broad Wi-Fi coverage.

    Imagine if you were working on a desktop PC in your bedroom but wanted to head downstairs for a bite to eat while looking up something on your phone. Using the mesh network, you could enjoy Wi-Fi connectivity that remains just as strong in both places.

    If we return to the just-mentioned example of working from home, you could – while still upstairs – use your phone to look up something online and then continue looking at that phone’s screen as you head downstairs. Along the way, the strength of your online connection could stay intact.

    Why is this possible? It’s because the various nodes installed around the property would be able to wirelessly communicate with each other so that, as you move around the house, the phone is automatically switched from one node to another – therefore protecting the Wi-Fi signal’s strength.

    With a traditional Wi-Fi network, just one device – the router – would be responsible for all of your Wi-Fi coverage. Therefore, the further the physical distance you are from the router, the weaker the Wi-Fi signal you would be able to receive.

    With a mesh network, however, each of the access points – including the main mesh router as well as all of the nodes – would be able to produce its own Wi-Fi signal. Therefore, you will never be far from an access point – and, thus, a strong signal.
